Open University Benefits From Exalead CloudView Search

Leading British distance learning institution improves search facility
for staff and 200,000 worldwide students

Exalead, a global provider of search-based business application (SBA) technology, today announced that Open University has selected its CloudView Search solution to enrich end user experience. The platform provides core search capabilities for the University's website, Intranet and Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to cater to the needs of its staff, tutors and visitors.

Incorporated as a university in 1971, Open University is the leading open admissions, distance-learning institution in the UK, with approximately 4,500 staff and 7,500 tutors. It has more than 200,000 students in over 40 countries studying for a variety of degrees and vocational qualifications ranging from short courses to PhDs. As a major e-learning institution, it is important to make the University's resources as easy to navigate as possible and to provide the best possible search tools to students and researchers.

"Search tools are essential to the University's academic mission. The public facing web presence is a large complex network of more than two thousand inter-linked websites, hosted on multiple domains, whilst the intranet alone consists of around three hundred sites," explained the Open University's Business Change Manager, Intranet, Nicky Waters. "Intranet search had been fairly neglected over time and there had been no real business management around it. This, combined with an older search tool, contributed to a poor end user experience. It was evident from feedback that we had to do something about it."

Following an exhaustive selection process, Exalead's CloudView Search was selected as it offered an exceptionally powerful and user-friendly search capability, coupled with the adaptability and scalability to make it suitable for such a large, and potentially complex project.

"Users can already find things easier and quicker. Feedback, particularly at the usability testing stage, indicated time and cost savings in the future," explained Waters. "Improved relevance ranking means that staff can actually find content which they had trouble finding prior to the implementation of Exalead."

Exalead's CloudView Search is an easy-to-use platform for creating search-based applications that access both structured and unstructured data such as instant messages, emails, web pages, and multimedia. With its innovative architecture, the CloudView platform provides core search solutions, which are feature rich and extremely easy to implement, thus providing a perfect combination of reduced administration costs and a better search experience for customers.

"CloudView Search provides a much more sophisticated user interface, with the right hand categorisation and filtering of results. It allows users to 'roll up' results, which prevents results from the same site from flooding the results interface," Waters concluded "It also saves users from having to scroll through pages and pages of results. Users can search across all University content at once, or alternatively, can navigate and drill down on a particular set of results."

The University is considering the technical possibilities afforded by Exalead CloudView Search in a project to make both audio and digital content fully searchable. It also plans to integrate existing document management systems using Exalead's technology.

Natixis Private Equity Improves Investment Decision-Making with Exalead

Natixis Private Equity Improves Investment Decision-Making with Exalead

Exalead®, a global provider of search and information access software for the enterprise and the Web, announced today that Natixis Private Equity has selected the Exalead CloudView platform to equip it 300 financial analysts with more intelligent access to the group’s information assets. Natixis Private Equity is the leading provider of private equity services in France for SMEs (businesses valued from €50 to €500 million) and a branch of Natixis, the corporate and investment bank owned by France’s second largest banking group, BCPE. NPE’s 300 employees are organized into 20 teams in 10 countries, and manage a €4billion portfolio of 695 investments.

To make the wisest investment decisions possible, private equity professionals need both a deep understanding of the markets they serve as well as perfect visibility into the companies in which they currently or may potentially invest. Accordingly, in 2007, Natixis Private Equity sought to equip its analysts with more effective access to information within the group’s CRM system (Microsoft Dynamics) and a collection of nearly 15 million documents (2.2 million documents, 1.5 million active e-mails, 10 million archived e-mails, and 120,000 press articles).

After an unsuccessful two-year experience with Autonomy, Natixis Private Equity decided a change of strategy was required, and they turned to Exalead CloudView to meet their information access needs.
"Our first attempt with Autonomy was difficult, but it provided us with valuable insights. From that early experience, we knew we needed a tool that was at once full-featured but also simple and flexible, one that we could easily adapt and evolve as our needs changed. This was exactly the solution we found in Exalead, in addition to a closer, more responsive support team," explains Brice Delons, CIO at Natixis Private Equity.

Immediate Results
Natixis Private Equity was able to integrate CloudView into their information systems in just five days, with the out-of-the-box interface delivering an immediately satisfying user experience. CloudView’s dynamic data classification and categorization capabilities hide the complexities of Natixis Private Equity’s heterogeneous information systems, and the platform provides simple tools for adapting the solution to the group’s unique body of knowledge and research habits.

"Our staff now has easy access to reliable and timely information," declares Mr. Delons. "With Exalead CloudView, we are able to provide our employees with unified access to our enterprise data, regardless of the source or format and independent of the original application. More importantly, it permits a cross-referencing and enrichment of information across these heterogeneous applications, helping our analysts to better understand the available information and to make smarter investment decisions as a result," he adds.

A Limited TCO and a Rapid ROI
Natixis Private Equity chose Exalead CloudView after an extensive study of the information access technologies available in the marketplace. "We were impressed with the indexing capacity and performance of CloudView, and we quickly realized that Exalead’s solution – in contrast to the platform we had originally chosen – would allow us to deliver a search service that would bring real value to our end users while enabling us to control our total investment (software, service, hardware and maintenance)," notes Mr. Delons.

"In addition, we were able to integrate the solution into our existing architecture quickly and non-intrusively, while meeting all our security requirements," states Mr. Delons. "The platform offered native connectors for all the information sources we wanted to index, and consumes very lean resources. As a result, we achieved a significant reduction in costs while gaining important functional enhancements for our users - a key accomplishment," adds Mr. Delons.

Going Further with Exalead
Natixis Private Equity now plans to extend the search service to additional data silos, and to explore new navigational and reporting possibilities for their newly unified information assets.

"With Exalead CloudView, the team at Natixis Private Equity is benefitting from a highly innovative service that permits them to at once improve their productivity and to gain a more comprehensive vision of information - a real asset when one is striving to achieve a clear understanding of opportunities and risks against a backdrop of large volumes of data. It’s a solution that perfectly represents the value of search and search based applications: to rapidly make information more accessible, timely, and relevant in order to deliver a significant bottom line benefit to businesses," concludes Alain Cotte, CEO, Exalead.

Exalead Anchors US International Trade Commission

U.S. International Trade Commission Selects Exalead CloudView as Primary Search Engine

Exalead, a global leader of information access solutions and search-based applications for the enterprise and on the web, today announced the United States International Trade Commission (USITC), an independent, Federal agency with broad investigative responsibilities on matters of trade, has deployed Exalead CloudView.

USITC end user site surveys indicated that people couldn't easily find the information they were looking for on www.usitc.gov via its search function. In 2009, USITC decided to replace its previous search software and reviewed a number of other enterprise search options for a solution that met its needs, was easy to administer, and fit its budget.

"We picked Exalead to support searching our website because it met all of our requirements. Our production systems run on different platforms, some Windows and some Linux, which CloudView supported." said Joel Moeller, E-Business Division Manager at USITC. "Our user feedback now indicates that the search functionality on our site has improved and information is easier to find."

Exalead CloudView is being deployed in 2 ways at USITC:
  • First, Exalead powers the search functionality on the USITC web site: www.usitc.gov. USITC's web site offers users access to more than 40,000 documents in a wide range of formats including PDF, spreadsheets, Microsoft Word and Word Perfect files.
  • Second, USITC is expanding the Exalead CloudView implementation so that it will be used internally by USITC staff, allowing them to search file systems, folders, and data repositories. Previously, searches were often done manually, document by document, which made searches time consuming and sometimes fruitless.
Exalead CloudView features and benefits include:
  • Radically increases the value and range of information available to agents (and customers)
  • Dramatically boosts system performance and reduces costs via database offloading, workforce decentralization and customer self-service
  • Significantly increases agility with a highly scalable SOA architecture and support for standard Web technologies
  • Greatly simplifies usage with Web-style speed and simplicity (see CloudView Platform Highlights)

Ovum Finds Exalead CloudView™ to be Next Generation Search and Information Access Platform

Exalead CloudView best for search-based applications and business intelligence

Exalead, the leading provider of search-based application platforms, today announced the findings of the Ovum group's technology audit of Exalead CloudView 5.0. Ovum, a leading provider of research, analysis and consulting in technology and telecom business sectors, finds Exalead CloudView 5.0 to be a highly scalable, high performance SOA search platform for search-based application and SQL-less analytics. Ovum states that the offering’s scalable service-oriented architecture provides advanced data-extraction, indexation, and text-analytics features that are suited to a wide range of usage scenarios, including web facing sites and enterprise search.

Ovum notes that some organizations have reached the limitations of their preferred RDBMS for information access. A remedy proposed by Ovum is the consideration of the possibilities afforded by search-based applications, particularly when huge amounts of structured and unstructured data are involved.

Ovum further advises that organizations seeking to exploit social applications, whether internal or external, should also assess the capabilities of CloudView because this information could well provide new kinds of business intelligence.

"Current deployments where CloudView is used for unified information presentation, reporting, and search, illustrate the fact that the product is relevant for organizations that are evaluating innovative uses of search technology," states Mike Davis, Senior Analyst, Ovum.

A broad range of search-based applications have been built using Exalead CloudView, including customer self-service web sites, B2B and B2C e-commerce, customer intelligence, supply chain logistics information, R&D collaboration, project management and e-discovery. Exalead's search-based application platform enables organizations to build purposeful, strategic information applications that directly enhance internal productivity and value to customers.

"Ovum's conclusions certainly mirror the feedback we receive from our customers," notes Raymond Bentnick, Managing Director, Exalead UK. "By providing direct business value from strategic search-based applications, we can directly impact an organization’s profitability."
