Exalead Anchors US International Trade Commission

U.S. International Trade Commission Selects Exalead CloudView as Primary Search Engine

Exalead, a global leader of information access solutions and search-based applications for the enterprise and on the web, today announced the United States International Trade Commission (USITC), an independent, Federal agency with broad investigative responsibilities on matters of trade, has deployed Exalead CloudView.

USITC end user site surveys indicated that people couldn't easily find the information they were looking for on www.usitc.gov via its search function. In 2009, USITC decided to replace its previous search software and reviewed a number of other enterprise search options for a solution that met its needs, was easy to administer, and fit its budget.

"We picked Exalead to support searching our website because it met all of our requirements. Our production systems run on different platforms, some Windows and some Linux, which CloudView supported." said Joel Moeller, E-Business Division Manager at USITC. "Our user feedback now indicates that the search functionality on our site has improved and information is easier to find."

Exalead CloudView is being deployed in 2 ways at USITC:
  • First, Exalead powers the search functionality on the USITC web site: www.usitc.gov. USITC's web site offers users access to more than 40,000 documents in a wide range of formats including PDF, spreadsheets, Microsoft Word and Word Perfect files.
  • Second, USITC is expanding the Exalead CloudView implementation so that it will be used internally by USITC staff, allowing them to search file systems, folders, and data repositories. Previously, searches were often done manually, document by document, which made searches time consuming and sometimes fruitless.
Exalead CloudView features and benefits include:
  • Radically increases the value and range of information available to agents (and customers)
  • Dramatically boosts system performance and reduces costs via database offloading, workforce decentralization and customer self-service
  • Significantly increases agility with a highly scalable SOA architecture and support for standard Web technologies
  • Greatly simplifies usage with Web-style speed and simplicity (see CloudView Platform Highlights)

About USITC

The United States International Trade Commission is an independent, quasi-judicial Federal agency with broad investigative responsibilities on matters of trade. The agency investigates the effects of dumped and subsidized imports on domestic industries and conducts global safeguard investigations. The Commission also adjudicates cases involving imports that allegedly infringe intellectual property rights.

Through such proceedings, the agency facilitates a rules-based international trading system. The Commission also serves as a Federal resource where trade data and other trade policy-related information are gathered and analyzed. The information and analysis are provided to the President, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), and Congress to facilitate the development of sound and informed U.S. trade policy. The Commission makes most of its information and analysis available to the public to promote understanding of international trade issues.

The mission of the Commission is to (1) administer U.S. trade remedy laws within its mandate in a fair and objective manner; (2) provide the President, USTR, and Congress with independent analysis, information, and support on matters of tariffs, international trade, and U.S. competitiveness; and (3) maintain the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS).

The Commission has five major operations that serve its external customers:
     - Import Injury Investigations
     - Intellectual Property-Based Import Investigations
     - Industry and Economic Analysis
     - Tariff and Trade Information Services
     - Trade Policy Support
